How to Choose the Right Dumpster Size for Your Project

Thomas Rodriguez March 2025 8 min read

Choosing the wrong dumpster size is the #1 mistake NYC renters make — and it's an expensive one. Too small and you're paying for a second delivery. Too big and you're overpaying for space you didn't need. This guide eliminates the guesswork.

Understanding Dumpster Size Measurement

Dumpster sizes are measured in cubic yards. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet — roughly the size of a standard washing machine. When a company says "10-yard dumpster," they mean a container that holds 10 cubic yards of debris. Here's the conversion that matters most in real terms:

  • 1 cubic yard = approximately 1 pickup truck load of loose debris
  • 10-yard dumpster = approximately 3 pickup truck loads
  • 20-yard dumpster = approximately 6 pickup truck loads
  • 30-yard dumpster = approximately 9 pickup truck loads
  • 40-yard dumpster = approximately 12 pickup truck loads

Keep in mind that heavier materials (concrete, brick, tile) take up less cubic space but hit weight limits faster. We'll cover this in the heavy debris section below.

The 10-Yard Dumpster — Small NYC Projects

The 10-yard is our smallest roll-off and our most popular size for New York City apartment dwellers, brownstone owners, and small renovation projects. It fits in a standard parking space, making it ideal for tight NYC streets and narrow driveways.

Typical dimensions: 12 ft long × 8 ft wide × 4 ft high

Best for these NYC projects:

  • Studio or 1-bedroom apartment cleanout
  • Single bathroom remodel (tub, tile, vanity, toilet)
  • Small kitchen update (no major structural work)
  • Carpet and flooring removal (1–2 rooms)
  • Small deck demolition
  • Spring cleaning (large home or small apartment)

"If you can walk around your project area in under 30 seconds and point to a pile that's roughly the size of a small SUV, you probably need a 10-yard."

The 15-Yard Dumpster — Medium Projects

The 15-yard sits between the compact 10 and the popular 20, and it's the right choice when a 10 feels too tight but a 20 feels excessive. It's particularly good for NYC townhouse cleanouts and medium renovations.

Best for:

  • 2–3 room apartment cleanout
  • Medium bathroom or kitchen remodel
  • Office furniture removal (5–10 workstations)
  • Roofing on a small attached home

The 20-Yard Dumpster — NYC's Most Popular Size

The 20-yard is our most frequently ordered container in New York City, and for good reason — it handles the widest variety of projects at a price point that makes sense. Most full home renovations, large apartment cleanouts, and kitchen gut renovations fall squarely in 20-yard territory.

Best for:

  • Full kitchen gut renovation
  • Whole-apartment or whole-floor cleanout
  • Flooring replacement (entire home)
  • Large estate cleanout (smaller home)
  • Garage cleanout
  • Medium roofing project

The 30-Yard Dumpster — Large Renovations and Construction

When your project involves structural changes, multiple rooms, or significant debris volume, step up to the 30-yard. This is the workhorse for Brooklyn brownstone renovations, full gut rehabs, and larger construction projects.

Best for:

  • Full home gut renovation
  • Brownstone or multi-family building renovation
  • Large roofing tear-off
  • Basement renovation with structural work
  • Large estate cleanout
  • Medium commercial renovation

The 40-Yard Dumpster — Major Commercial and Industrial Projects

The largest container we offer, the 40-yard is reserved for major demolition projects, new construction, commercial gut renovations, and campus-scale cleanouts. Its significant size requires careful placement planning and often benefits from our project manager coordination service.

Best for:

  • Commercial building demolition
  • Ground-up construction waste
  • Multi-floor office renovation
  • Hotel room block gut renovation
  • Large industrial facility cleanup

Special Consideration: Heavy Debris in NYC

Concrete, brick, masonry, and soil are much heavier than general household debris and will hit weight limits before they fill the container visually. For these materials:

  • Use a smaller container — fill a 10-yard halfway rather than a 30-yard
  • Mix heavy material with lighter debris where possible
  • Call us for a "heavy debris" rated container if you have large concrete quantities
